Facebook almost at 100 million users in Europe

Facebook almost at 100 million users in Europe

When you are in an agency pitch it’s almost impossible not to use the ‘f’ word – Facebook. It almost makes my heart sink as it can seem like ticking the ‘and then there’s Facebook’ box, when you know there are more creative routes of getting the message out online.
But this chart shows why it [...]

Once consumers hear about you via social media, they are more likely to engage in brand searches

Despite various stats that cast doubts on the effectiveness of online advertising in general, the one area that is generally held to be a success is paid for search. New research by Comscore and GroupM (via Marketing Charts) now shows that if consumers have had exposure to brands via social media, they are [...]

Mobile phones becoming our ‘remote controls for life’…we even take them to bed with us

Market research outfit Synovate has come out with a study of 8000 mobile/cell phone users in eleven countries and found that the handsets are increasingly becoming our remote controls for life.

Aside from SMS, Synovate found that the three most used phone features were:

Alarm clock, 67% globally…meaning that for 2/3 of us, our phones are ever [...]

Online takes second place in media time behind TV

Online takes second place in media time behind TV

Today the Internet Advertising Bureau (UK) gave its membersaccess to the full stats for its ad spend study – the one that hit the headlines yesterday for showing that the UK was the first marketwhere online had overtaken TV spend.
Most of the presentation obviously looks at ad trends in more detail, but the one stat [...]

Brands up their ad spend on blogs, social media

Some recently published Nielsen stats show that, at least in the States, advertising on blogs and social media is up, even in industry sectors where online ads have seen a (I assume recessionary) decline.
Nielsen estimates that in the US, total blog and social media ad spend has gone up from 7% in August 2008 to [...]

An example of how paid news could work – CNN’s iPhone app

An example of how paid news could work – CNN’s iPhone app

Mediabuyerplanner has the news that CNN is bringing out an iPhone app. And unlike a lot of other news applications, this one costs money – $1.99 in the US (I can’t as yet see what the UK price will be).
According to KC Estenson, general manager of CNN.com, people will probably pay for the app, [...]

Twitter users more likely to talk about your brand, click on your ads

Twitter users more likely to talk about your brand, click on your ads

The other week I posted about a study showing that 20% of tweets were in some way about brands. Now comes another survey, done by Interpret (via marketingcharts), that shows that Twitter users are 2x as likely to click on ads, review products and visit brand profiles online.
Involving 9200 users the study found that 24% [...]

We’re about to hit 24-hour darkness? Best to log into Facebook then

Inside Facebook looks at the list of countries with the highest % penetration by population and makes an observation. Countries with cold, dark winters top the list – Iceland (49.5%), Norway (45.4%) and Canada (38.7%).
Meanwhile the fact that a third of Brits use Facebook is noteworthy, simply because of the size of the country’s [...]

Has Twitter’s growth rate finally bottomed out?

Has Twitter’s growth rate finally bottomed out?

With the micro-blogging platform Twitter being valued a staggering $1 billion, Hitwise North America analyst Bill Tancer provides some food for thought.
In particular Bill asks whether the micro-blogging platform with the stated aim of being ‘the pulse of the planet‘ is running out of steam based on visitor stats he’s gone through.
Bill looks at US [...]

iPhone users browse the net the most, look at ads the least

Bad news for mobile advertisers comes from this US study from the Chitika Network.
It shows that mobile advertising click-through rates are barely half those of the already derisory online rates – 0.48 vs 0.83%.
iPhone users were even less likely to click through to ads, scoring 0.30%. This is despite the fact that iPhone users account [...]
